What is Radon?

Radon Is a Cancer‑Causing, radioactive gas you cannot see, smell, or taste radon. When you breathe air containing radon, you increase your risk of getting lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General of the United States has warned that radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for non smokers in the United States today. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of lung cancer is especially high.

Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless gas that comes from deposits of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It is harmlessly dispersed in outdoor air, but when trapped in buildings, can be harmful, especially at elevated levels. Radon is a radioactive decay product of radium, which is itself a decay product of uranium. Uranium and radium are both common elements in soil.

Radon is a radioactive gas that is found in homes and buildings all over the United States. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water and gets into the air we breathe. Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home or work place through cracks and other holes and entry paths into the foundation. Any buildings can trap radon inside and have a radon problem as long as it has ground contact somewhere. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, offices, places of worship, any building or home with or without basements. In fact, you and your family are most likely to get your greatest radiation exposure at home. That is where you spend most of your time. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. WV, OH, US EPA and the Surgeon General recommend all homes and building be tested. Call use today and we can develop a plan of action and testing strategy.
